Not the most accessible...
Florence Cottage is a small property hidden away amongst some of the Marieland Estate tea plantations. Despite the difficulty in getting to the property, if you want a peaceful place to stay, then this is ideal.
The road from Wattegama is very rough and unsealed for the last 4km which was certainly difficult and rather dangerous in a tuk tuk, however if you enter from Rangala then the road is much better.
The cottage itself is self contained with a small kitchen facility and living/dining area as well a spacious bedroom. The gardens are very well kept with plenty of places to sit and enjoy the views. Jeganadan is the caretaker of the property and a very caring man. He walked a few kilometres to come and meet us at the difficult intersection when finding the cottage and was always courteous in discussing our meals etc. The chef on the property made us a very tasty Sri Lankan evening meal and breakfast, both of which were huge and we couldn’t finish them.
If you have your own transport (preferably something good for mountainous roads) and like to get away from everything, this is an ideal spot. Be prepared for ‘wildlife’ in and around the property, but this is to be expected in a cottage that is situated in the deep hills outside Kandy.
